ABOUT THE FOUNDER
Hong-Kong-born DJ/producer, vinyl collector, contemporary violinist and live electronic artist Olivia Dawn Mok (O)’s adventure began at the age of 5 with the violin and piano. She made her first solo concert appearance with orchestra at the age of 10, and debuted at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre at the age of 11. Having developed a love for poetry and songwriting in her dormitory bedroom, she went on to study classical violin at The Juilliard School in New York and attained two masters degrees in jazz and music technology on scholarship from Berklee College of Music’s Masters Campus in Valencia, focusing on violin and electronic music production where she also played in a Brazilian Batucada group. Throughout her school years she developed a love for N64 games and old anime soundtracks.
During her 10 years away from home, O was exposed to a wide range of artists in different genres, from Philip Glass to Jean-Luc Ponty, Pat Metheny Group, The Roots, Hiroshi Yoshimura, Boards of Canada, Larry Heard, Kraftwerk and 80’s Cantonese classics, which shaped her taste. Having grown up in the 90’s-00’s, O’s taste and work ranges from ambient soundscapes to jazz, old school grooves, italo and electro, with nostalgic 80’s Cantopop and Japanese anime influences. Known for stage presence, versatility and open-minded musicality, O’s knowledge goes beyond jazz to folk, funk, soul, rock and world music. She began building and collaborating with like-minded individuals in both music and art who shared her passion, regardless of genre or physical boundaries - from creating the music for the Basquiat “Warrior” campaign for Christie’s Asia to Nike’s “Blazer” campaign. O has successfully redesigned the musical blueprint of Carlyle & Co, through selective jazz bookings as former Music Director, having previously served as Music Curator of W Hong Kong and W London - Leicester Square. During her time at C&Co., she spearheaded the Cafe Carlyle & Friends jazz festival, booking 16 live acts across two stages, with a vinyl fair and 6 DJs, and has hosted fireside chats with artists such as Judith Hill and Charlotte dos Santos.
As a jazz violinist, she has collaborated with artists such as Reuben James and Jalen Ngonda, and has played as a guest soloist in Le French May’s tribute concert to Michel Petrucciani alongside the Carpio Brothers and Sylvain Gagnon. Within the classical music realm, she has collaborated with Elliot Leung as guest Ableton programmer with the Hong Kong Philharmonic for the Metaverse Symphony, using innovative samples taken from Hong Kong streets to incorporate into classical music. In the pop music realm, she has served as a guest performer at the Hong Kong Coliseum as well as producing for select pop artists in Taiwan and Hong Kong.
O has curated musical journeys for quality F&B establishments such as 2* restaurant Arbor and Felix at the Peninsula Hong Kong. She has performed at festivals and clubs around the world (Belgium, Australia, Vietnam, China, Holland, UK, Thailand) as well as numerous fashion events for Tatler, Vogue, Nike, Versace, Prada, Miu Miu, Tiffany & Co., Louis Vuitton, Fendi etc. as an active regular in the Hong Kong fashion scene, having been featured in shoots for brands such as Loewe and Gucci.
Having spent the last three years evolving her sound, the Olivia Dawn (“OD”) violin alias is dedicated primarily to live jazz shows and select cultural events. As of 2020 she committed to building the world of a separate underground alias, amassing a serious record collection.
With two EP releases under her belt with support from BBC Radio 1, NTS, Resident Advisor and Mixmag, the new Xiaolin (“XL”) project is beginning to gain footing within the electronic music scene. O’s vast sonic palette as XL allows her to continue developing a unique 80’s-90’s-inspired sound for DJ sets while focussing on production with musical integrity in mind. XL has curated live ambient soundscapes for Louis Vuitton’s “Objets Nomades” exhibition as well as Macau’s Teamlab exhibition c/o Chopard.
Whether at 宀 or Cafe Carlyle, the Cultural Centre, the Coliseum, a gallery or a catwalk, O remains uncompromising and true to her craft, an ever-evolving figure whose contributions over the years has garnered her respect throughout different facets of Hong Kong’s budding cultural landscape.
